Four terms that should never be used carelessly
Material, forming and decoration are separate parts of a piece’s history. A truthful product description identifies each claim separately instead of treating every brilliant object as though it were made in the same way.
Cut-to-clear
A coloured outer layer lies over contrasting or clear glass. Cutting through the coloured layer reveals the glass beneath, so pattern and colour become inseparable parts of the design.
Pressed glass
Molten glass receives its form and exterior decoration in a mould. Pressed work can be accomplished and beautiful, but the pattern is formed during shaping rather than cut into the cooled object afterwards.
Engraved glass
Engraving also removes glass from a cooled surface, often with a copper wheel and abrasive or a pointed tool. It commonly creates finer lines, tonal detail or illustrative work rather than the deeper facets associated with cutting.

The finish
Cut surfaces and final details are refined so light moves cleanly through the completed pattern.
Handwork is not valuable because it promises random variation. It matters because a practiced maker can respond to a curve, deepen a cut, adjust a meeting point and preserve visual balance where a fixed pattern would merely repeat.

01 What is cut crystal glassware?
Cut crystal glassware is a formed glass or crystal object whose decoration is produced afterwards by removing material with cutting wheels and abrasives. The cuts create grooves, facets and reflective planes in the surface.
02 Is cut crystal the same as lead crystal?
No. “Cut” describes a decorative process. “Lead crystal” describes a material classification. Cut glass may be lead-free, while lead crystal may be plain, cut, engraved or pressed. The product description should state material and decoration separately.
03 How can you tell hand-cut crystal from pressed glass?
Look for evidence across the entire object: grooves that enter the surface, changes in cut depth, polished facets, the way motifs adapt around curves, the relationship between the exterior and interior, and possible mould seams. 04 What does cut-to-clear crystal mean?
Cut-to-clear describes layered colour and cutting used together. A coloured outer layer is placed over clear or contrasting glass, then selected areas are cut through the colour to reveal the layer beneath. The result is a pattern articulated by both depth and colour contrast.
05 How should cut crystal glassware be cleaned?
